I Downgraded iCloud and Kept the Only Part That Matters

Everyone pays for iCloud+ and nobody knows why. I was one of them. Monthly charge, barely thought about it, just auto-paid like a good Apple customer lol.

Then I actually looked at what I was using it for. Turns out I was paying for a bunch of storage I did not need.

My photos don’t live in iCloud

Here is the thing. My photos live in Google Photos. I have said this before, I prefer it because it keeps an independent copy. I delete a photo from my phone, it is still in Google Photos. With iCloud, you delete from your phone and it is gone everywhere. That mirror behavior freaks me out, so Google Photos won that battle years ago.

So if my photos are not in iCloud, what was I actually paying for? Device backups. That is it. My iPhone backup, so if my phone dies I do not lose everything. And device backups do not need much space at all.

The downgrade

I did not cancel outright. I downgraded to the cheapest tier and kept backups running. I still pay Apple something, but I am not lighting money on fire every month for storage I will never fill.

It took about two minutes in Settings. The hardest part was honestly just deciding to do it, because cancelling or downgrading anything feels like you are giving something up. You are not. You are just stop paying for air.

It is the habit, not the amount

This is the habit, by the way. I do this with everything now. Small recurring charges, I kill them or shrink them. It is not about the dollars, it is about the habit. Every subscription has to earn its spot.

I am in a phase of trimming every recurring dollar I can find. I wrote about the ugly side of ignoring this stuff in my balance transfer post, and the lesson is the same. Autopay makes you lazy. Look at the list once in a while.

What I actually kept

So here is my setup now. Google Photos handles all my photos and videos, independent copies, no mirror-delete anxiety. iCloud handles device backups on the cheapest tier, so my iPhone is covered if anything happens to it. That is the only part of iCloud that ever mattered to me, and it costs almost nothing.

If you are taking care of your iPhone anyway, like checking battery health before you buy, this is the same energy. Know what you are paying for, keep what matters, cut the rest.

Go look at your subscriptions today. I bet there is at least one you are paying for out of pure inertia. That was me and iCloud.
