How to Check iPhone Battery Health Before Buying (2025 Edition)
You’re about to meet a guy in a Tim Hortons parking lot to buy an iPhone. He says it’s in “great condition.” Cool. But before you hand over that cash, there’s one number you need to check:
Battery Health.
Battery health tells you how much charge the iPhone can hold compared to when it was brand new. On iPhones, it’s shown as a percentage.
It’s crucial to know How to Check iPhone Battery Health Before Buying (2025 Edition) to avoid potential issues.
How to Check iPhone Battery Health
- 1. Open the Settings app
- 2. Tap Battery
- 3. Tap Battery Health & Charging
- 4. Look for Maximum Capacity (%)
What’s a Good Battery Health?
- 90%+: Basically new
- 85–89%: Still solid (I personally buy these)
- 80–84%: Getting close to replacement
- Below 80%: Will likely get throttled by iOS or need a new battery soon
Ask for a Screenshot
If you’re buying online, ask the seller to send a screenshot of the Battery Health screen. If they say:
“I don’t know how to check”
Send them this post.
“It’s good”
Not good enough.
“It’s 100% because I reset it”
Wrong. Battery health stays the same after a reset.
ByteFlip Tip
Some sellers have multiple phones.
Make sure the battery health screenshot they sent is for the phone you’re actually meeting for — not a different one in their backpack.
Don’t Be Afraid of 84%
Honestly, I’ve bought and flipped phones with 83–85% battery health and never had a buyer complain. If the price is right, and the rest of the phone is clean? It’s still a flip-worthy deal.
ByteFlip Wrap-Up
• Always check the actual battery percentage — don’t take “it’s fine” as an answer
• I stick to 85% and up for most of my flips
• Don’t touch anything below 80% unless you’re factoring in a battery swap
